The building requirements outlined by NHBC and LABC only advocate the use of austenitic stainless steel or PVCu beads in all external refining applications anywhere in the UK. In any case, galvanized steel balls are no longer accepted for external rendering.
Simpson Strong-Tie Sales Director Jon Head said: “We only recommend using stainless steel or PVCu products for external applications. Galvanized steel balls should not be used externally.
“Although galvanized steel is widely known for its corrosion resistance, galvanized steel still reacts with the chemical components in the plaster, which can cause quality problems, from unsightly rust spots to degradation of beads, and possible Cracking.
“In short, the galvanized steel in the exterior wall decoration may rust, which will shorten your working life, and the cost of correction is high. But the good news is that it is easy to avoid.”
Head added: “Stainless steel beads are specifically designed for cement-based plastering. Our stainless steel corner beads, bell beads, stop beads and sports beads, as well as PVCu plastic replacement series have been carefully designed to provide reinforcement. And resist impact damage.
“Our bead series make it easier to form bells, corners, stops and abutments, and can be cut to certain sizes as needed.”
